The brand would encompass programming blocks on NBCUniversal and Ion's respective flagship broadcast television networks ( NBC, Telemundo and Ion Television), a video on demand service, a website, and a standalone 24-hour network to be carried as a digital subchannel on terrestrial television stations owned by Ion Media Networks and by pay-TV providers. In May 2006, Ion Media Networks, NBCUniversal (which owned a 32% interest in Ion Media at the time), Corus Entertainment, Scholastic Corporation and Classic Media (now part of NBCUniversal's DreamWorks Animation) announced plans to launch a new, multi-platform children's entertainment brand known as Qubo, oriented towards providing "educational, values-oriented programming" targeted towards children between 5 and 14 years of age. Scripps Company, it ceased operations on February 28, 2021. Owned by Ion Media, it consisted of a 24-hour free-to-air television network often mentioned as the "Qubo channel" (available as a digital terrestrial television service on owned-and-operated stations and some affiliates of corporate sister Ion Television, as well as on some pay-TV providers), associated website with games and programs available through video on demand, and a weekly programming block on Ion Television, along with Ion Life, later known as Ion Plus.įollowing Ion Media's acquisition by the E. ![]() I’ve personally seen clients copying crucial material without using copy and verification software and only making one back up. The task itself seems simple on the surface but it’s definitely more complex than meets the eye and the responsibility is huge. ![]() They see it as an easy task, ‘it’s just copy and paste so it should be simple right?’. I’ve seen a lot of undermining of the DIT / Data Wrangler Role where Producers or Production Managers try and save some money by doing data themselves or farming it out to the runner who already has 300 other things to do. Do you think a lot of people don’t take copy verification seriously enough?ĭefinitely. This becomes particularly crucial when you are 14 Hours into a shoot day and feeling very tired, mistakes will be made and you need to be able to catch them. Only when I get ticks from all my little processes do I move on. We are humans, not robots, so I take a layered approach where I am always cross checking myself and the software. Often times you will get interrupted while running your quality control checks and have to come back to it, when starting and stopping tasks like this it’s easy to forget where you are up to or to make mistakes and miss things. My process factors in the human condition and has lots of contingencies built in that allows for human error and software error. Copy and Verification Software has your back, it performs checksums to verify your offloads, creates detailed reports and produces a paper trail that can be referenced later. If you make a mistake there is no one there to call you out until it is too late. I work primarily in TVCs and I’m often in situations where you are managing big data on multi-million dollar commercials and no one else is checking your work. When working as a DIT or Data Wrangler you are responsible for the data integrity of a project. Why is it important to use copy and verification software and what are your recommended practices for doing it? I want to be able to recommend the fastest and safest offload tool so I decided to run an experiment and pit the four big players against one another. Over the past few weeks I’ve been testing out our new Data Deluxe System and as always, speed is a priority. ![]() For the rest of the job I used Silverstack and it has been my software of choice ever since. When you are doing 1TB Offloads this 100MB/s equates to a massive time-saving. This was using the exact same drive, media, and connection configuration. The specifics I have archived in my email but I believe we were getting around 100MB/s faster offloads with Silverstack compared to Shotput Pro. So I decided to grab a trial version of Silverstack XT and run some tests. I recall offloading with Shotput Pro and thinking it wasn’t as fast as it should be. Standalone I was getting around 600MB/s off the RAID Drives. We were using the Codex Vault XL coupled with a MacBook Pro and 2x 5 Bay RAID 5 Drives. If there was any job worthy of testing out a different data management system, it was this one. I had been curious about Silverstack for a while but had never given it a red hot go. ![]() I believe this was before Hedge was on the scene and I wasn’t aware of YoYotta. It was one of the first jobs in the country to use this new camera system and there was a lot of prep work and learning to be done as we figured out the best way to manage bucket loads of data while traveling from state to state on a very tight schedule.īefore the job, I had been a dedicated Shotput Pro user. Why did you decide to look more deeply into copy and verification software?Ī few years ago I did a TVC all around Australia using the Alexa 65. Here are the questions I posed to Bradley. They all got back to him and posed some questions bringing new information to the surface which he looked into and then decided to run the tests again. ![]() He compiled his results into a detailed blog post and sent it through privately to each respective developer. I caught up with Bradley Andrew from Filmdrives to ask him some questions and to show you his super in-depth article comparing some of the most popular copy and verification software.īradley recently ran some tests comparing the offload speeds of Shotput Pro, Silverstack, Hedge and YoYotta. What if I was to tell you that is not the case. You might be under the impression that all copy and verification software must do the same thing in the same way, and take the same amount of time to complete. ![]() ![]() ![]() The ones that I'm still quite proud of, they sounded good on Auratones and the ones that were just OK, they were no good on Auratones?. But I backchecked the mixes that I've done in the past. I really can't imagine to have just these in the studio, they are narrowband speakers - 75 - 17000 Hz. And most importantly, the price is almost the same! I switch monitors during mixing when I feel that I'm losing little focus or sense of balance. I was already looking for used ones on eBay, but you'll never really know how used up they are. They sound so "bad" that they highlight the flaws in your mix instantly, exactly what you'll need! And they are small in size too, you'll find a place for them. Auratone C5A active studio monitors are the perfect complement to your current monitoring system.I was looking for reference speakers and found that Auratone Cubes are back in production! It's actually rather more technical than that, but the upshot is a graphics card can export video a whole lot faster than even a top-end CPU. But even with four, six, eight, or even more cores, a CPU simply can't match the incredible power of a graphics card, which can contain thousands of processing cores. ![]() It used to be that video editing software relied solely on your computer's central processor (CPU) to process and export video. However, if you don't need total driver reliability, the similarly fast GeForce RTX 3060 Ti (top of our list) is still the better – and cheaper – buy. If you're going to be editing mission-critical footage and system stability is therefore absolutely paramount, the Quadro RTX A4000 is an excellent graphics card and it's actually very well priced for a Quadro card (flagship Quadro cards can set you back over $10,000!). The Quadro range gets you several processing benefits that are mostly of use to scientific and 3D rendering work, but the primary benefit for video editing are Quadro-specific video card drivers carefully optimized for popular video editing programs to ensure top-notch reliability. Well, for video editing, the vast majority of users will be fine with a GeForce card. ![]() The graphics card hardware in the RTX A4000 is almost identical to that of the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, which carries an MSRP that's around 40% cheaper than the A4000, so why pay more for a Quadro? The Quadro RTX A4000 sits near the middle of the Quadro range, but with faster models carrying astronomical price tags, they're aimed squarely at commercial buyers. Where GeForce cards are designed and marketed primarily for gaming, Quadro cards are built for professional applications like scientific computation, 3D rendering, and to a lesser extent, video editing. Nvidia doesn't just offer its extensive line of GeForce graphics cards there's also its Quadro range. Like almost all graphics cards, various board manufacturers make their own variants of the GTX 1660 Super, and unless you're gunning for every last frame-per-second in gaming performance, spending extra on a factory overclocked version isn't worth it.īeing more of an entry-level graphics card, it's also possible to find the GTX 1660 Super with a physically shorter board design, making it suitable to fit in smaller PC cases, though usually the cooling heatsink and fan assembly will still require the space of two expansion bays in your motherboard. The 1660 Super should give you a reasonable turn of rendering speed if you're working with Full HD footage, though with 'only' 6GB of video RAM on board, more upmarket RTX-series cards will have a significant edge if you're editing 8K or high frame rate 4K footage. Even cheaper cards are available, but their underwhelming performance means they're just not worth your money. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super is the lowest we think is acceptable to go in Nvidia's current graphics card line-up. Remember, you'll also need a PC powerful enough to let an RTX 4080 run to its full potential - a top end CPU, and a 750+ watt power supply, not to mention enough space to accommodate the card's huge bulk. Other equally impressive stats include 16GB of GDDR6X memory, running on a 256-bit bus at 22.4Gbps, making for a whopping 736GB/s of effective memory bandwidth. All that means this is going to handle anything you can throw at it, even if you're working in 8K. This will still be a video rendering beast, but its $1,200 MSRP is a little easier to stomach, as is the 320W power consumption. The next rung down down the RTX 4000-series ladder is the RTX 4080. ![]() BUT, with an MSRP of $1,600 (and you'll likely pay even more in reality), plus a colossal 450W power draw, you'll need to be exporting many hours of seriously high-value footage to justify an RTX 4090. Nvidia's RTX 4000-series graphics cards are currently the fastest graphics cards for video editing, with the halo RTX 4090 being king of the hill. ![]() ![]() ![]() I think, as a result, more of those choices ended up in the film," said Collins. "There was something about the confidence of having so many women in leadership positions that kind of, I think, let us be a little bit bolder with some of the choices we were making and not second guess it before we even got it through story or through editorial. "It wasn't intentional, but, it's kind of awesome to be unapologetic with some of this stuff and not have to feel at least that we're couching it or worried about it internally," producer Lindsey Collins added. "I think we've all had super embarrassing period stories and that definitely added to, 'OK, we have to have a scene like this in the movie,'" Shi said, adding, "If we're going to be doing a coming-of-age girl story, this is such a pivotal milestone in every girl's life, to have an embarrassing period story. "She did not understand why I was obsessed with these fictional characters, and why I drew them over and over again in my sketchbook, with their huge eyes, and strange, colorful hair," Shi said. Shi said the two of them did everything together until she started getting older and having interests in anime, comics, and hanging out with friends instead of her mom. "I was always very, very close with my parents, especially my mom, since my dad had to go away often for work. "Like Mei Lee in the movie, I am an only child," Shi said. The much praised Nemesis System that was at the core of Shadow of Mordor has returned but is now tweaked to accommodate a new army-building mechanic. My gripes are less with the quality of the combat system itself, and more with the fact that not enough has been done to iterate upon it.įortunately, many other aspects of Shadow of War have seen drastic shakeups compared to that of the first game. ![]() Variations of this style of combat have also been seen from both the Batman: Arkham series and Mad Max, and it's starting to feel a bit too heavily leaned-upon by Warner Bros.-published titles. Unfortunately, almost nothing was added to mix up the swordplay from that of its predecessor. That said, I did find the combat within Shadow of War to get stale from time-to-time. ![]() Taking on vast groups of Orcs and other various enemies is equal parts challenging and fun while also boasting a certain rhythm to it. ![]() Combat is once again just as sound as it was within Shadow of Mordor, and returning players should feel right at home as soon as they begin playing. If those who have reservations with these elements of the game could come into it realizing that this story is separate from the main canon of the books, then I think there's great enjoyment to be had.Īs I alluded to, the real reason to play Shadow of War is found within its gameplay. I'm not the biggest Lord of the Rings fan, but I know that there are many out there who might dislike some of the liberties that Monolith Productions took with the lore in Shadow of War. Of course, hardcore Middle-earth fans might have more of love or hate relationship with the story than I did. There are certain flashbacks featuring the Ringwraiths and Sauron that I really adored, but more often than not I was just looking forward to getting back into running around the world. Most of the supporting characters that aid Talion and Celebrimbor are forgettable and the introduction of Shelob as one of the main supporting characters struck me as odd since most of her inclusion in the narrative ends relatively early. Personally, I found the story of Shadow of War to be more interesting than that of Shadow of Mordor, but I still wouldn't consider it the game's strength. Major players like the Witch-king made the narrative that much more interesting, while someone like Gollum only seemed to be thrown in this time because of how well-known his character is. The involvement of these characters within the narrative of Shadow of War ranges from being highly important to being being little more than a cameo. Throughout the course of the campaign you run into a variety of well-known figures from Middle-earth, such as the spider - now taking the form of a woman - Shelob, the Witch-king (along with his Ringwraith followers), and the beguiling Gollum. This premise of building up your own army of Orcs, Uruks, and Olog-Hai is fairly straightforward, but I found it to be satisfactory. In the opening moments of the game, we find Talion and Celebrimbor crafting a new Ring of Power which will allow them to gather their own army and go toe-to-toe with Sauron's forces. Shadow of War picks up after the events of Mordor with us once again playing as the ranger Talion and the elf lord Celebrimbor who inhabits Talion's body. ![]() ![]() When you complete your studies or leave your post at Queen Mary your Office 365 email account will be deactivated and you will no longer have access to the free subscription of Office 365 ProPlus.
